Glossary of terms
Upheld
A complaint is upheld when a firm agrees with a complainants’ complaint, either fully or partly, and accepts that something went wrong. The firm may take action to put things right, such as paying compensation or correcting an error.
Redress
Redress is the action a firm takes to put things right when a customer has experienced a problem. This can include compensation payments or other remedies, such as correcting records or providing additional support.
Context data
Context data helps put complaint volumes into perspective by comparing complaints with the size of a firm's business.
For example, larger firms are likely to receive more complaints because they have more customers, accounts or policies. Context data can help make comparisons between firms more meaningful.
Closed complaint
A closed complaint is a complaint that has reached an outcome and no longer requires action from the firm. This includes complaints where the firm has provided a response and the complainant has accepted it.
Complaint received
A complaint received is a complaint reported by a complainant about a financial product or service provided by a regulated firm. Firms report the number of complaints they receive during each reporting period.
