Information on whistleblowing reports from general insurance brokers - April 2022

Reference Case Number: FOI9099

Freedom of Information: Right to know request:

With regards to your recently published Whistleblowing Quarterly Data 2021 Q4 I would like to ask please:

How many of the 279 new whistleblowing reports were from firms with permission to trade as a general insurance broker, by this I mean a company selling non-investment insurance contracts?

Similarly, with regards to your Whistleblowing Quarterly Data 2021 Q3 published in November 2021 (https://www.fca.org.uk/data/whistleblowing-quarterly-data-2021-q3) how many of the 289 new whistleblowing reports cited were from firms with permission to trade as a general insurance broker, by this I mean a company selling non-investment insurance contracts?

Finally:

  • How many whistleblowing reports were made to the FCA in 2021?
  • How many of these 2021 whistleblowing reports were from firms with permission to trade as a general insurance broker, by this I mean a company selling non-investment insurance contracts?
  • How many whistleblowing reports were made to FCA in 2020?
  • How many of these 2020 whistleblowing reports were from firms with permission to trade as a general insurance broker, by this I mean a company selling non-investment insurance contracts?

FCA response:

We can confirm that the FCA received 1073 whistleblowing reports in 2020 and 1025 whistleblowing reports in 2021.

In relation to the remainder of your request, when we receive a whistleblowing disclosure, we do not record the permissions held by the subject of the whistleblowing report. Therefore, we are unable to provide you with the number of those reports which ‘were from firms with permission to trade as a general insurance broker’.

To provide you with this information, we would be required to look into all firms that have been the subject of whistleblowing disclosures to ascertain which permissions they hold. The amount of analysis and reconciliation needed to comply with this element of your request would amount to the creation of new information, which we are not required to do under FOIA.
