Information on gender in Senior Management Functions - January 2024

Reference Case Number: FOI10969

Freedom of Information: Right to know request:

I would like to know the number of men and women in SMF1, SMF3, SMF27, SMF9, SMF16 and SMF17 positions at the end of 2023.

I would also like to know about the gender divide in the same controlled functions in relation to firms with permission to trade as a general insurance broker – by this I mean a company selling non-investment insurance contracts.

For both the Full FCA Cohort, and separately looking exclusively at exclusively at firms with permission to trade as a general insurance broker – by this I mean a company selling non-investment insurance contracts:

FCA response:

We do not hold the information on the gender as we do not systematically record the gender of individuals. We hold information on the salutations used by individuals and are responding to your questions on this basis. Please note, however, that:

  1. individuals may use a salutation that is different to their gender self-identification;
  2. there are several salutations which are gender neutral (e.g. ‘Doctor, ‘Professor’), or a role title was provided instead of a salutation (e.g. “Managing Partner”), and
  3. in some instances, the salutation field has been left blank.

The information we hold can be seen in the tables below.

Please note the figures were extracted on 8 January 2024 and are accurate as at that date.

The figures do not include data on SMF1 and SMF3 holders of Appointed Representative firms as these are not directly FCA authorised firms. For the same reasons, details of EEA authorised firms have not been included.

This data extract does not include individuals who have had their SMF position withdrawn, terminated, or rejected. These variables have been filtered out for the purpose of providing an accurate account of those who held their position as SMF at the end of December 2023.
