Freedom of Information: Right to know request:
How many mortgages (for houses, flats etc., i.e. residential properties) taken out before the end of March 1999 might still be active?
Assumption is that most mortgages at the time would have had a 25-year term, so those should have expired. I have no idea how many 25-year+ mortgages were taken out back then or how many might have been surrendered etc?
FCA response:
We can confirm that, as of H1 2024, there are 8,935,649 outstanding regulated mortgages.
Of these, 22,547 (representing 0.25% of the total) were taken out prior to April 1999.
