FCA response:
1. I am requesting information on how many whistleblowing reports were received by the FCA by firm type for the years 2019/20, 2020/21 and to the latest possible date into 2021/22
The below table provides the breakdown of the whistleblowing disclosures that have been received by the FCA and allocated to the most relevant area of the FCA to consider and assess.

We would like to explain the above table does not include the small number of cases each year that are created in the Whistleblowing team but do not to require further action by FCA sector teams. An example of this would be when we have received limited information that cannot be developed without the assistance of whistleblowers. This means that the figures are different to any previous FOIA requests or previous yearly totals provided.
2. How many whistleblowing reports for each year resulted in significant action being taken by the regulator?
The below table provides the number of disclosures which resulted in significant action taken. This value is given to disclosures whereby the FCA discharges its most serious penalties. Significant action can take time to conclude, and this can be seen by the numbers.
Please note the data below is listed by the year that the case was received not the year that the case was closed – although for 2021 they are one and the same.
To provide additional context we have also provided the number of disclosures that resulted in other levels of FCA action which are included in the table below for reference.

3. How many whistleblowing reports are yet to be closed/fully assessed for each year?
The new whistleblowing reports we receive are initially reviewed by the Whistleblowing team who create sanitised intelligence based on the whistleblowers concerns. This intelligence is then added to FCA databases and allocated to the relevant team within the FCA for assessment and action, if required. The below table provides cases that are under consideration by assessing teams and are yet to be closed. We have included the volume of cases that are currently being processed and prepared by the Whistleblowing team before being allocated to the most relevant team in the FCA. Cases are allocated daily so this figure will change each working day.
