Information on employment of data scientists-April 2024

We would like to explain, that when providing the number of 75 data scientists to the House of Lords, we defined data scientists as someone with relevant formal training or someone doing substantial data science work in their role. In providing the numbers in response to this request, we have used the definition provided in the question, which has led to a bigger pool of staff being included.

The number of staff broken down by department and grade can be found in the table below and was correct as of 10 April 2024.

Although we hold information in relation to your request, we are only able to provide you with information relating to the teams that lead on formal Data Science Governance. We are unable to extract information for any other employees across the organisation that may work on Data Science Governance as they only undertake these tasks as part of their role, and we do not make a distinction between this role and their everyday ‘business as usual’ tasks.

Data Governance is a central function within the FCA with responsibility for setting cross-organisational policy and standards for the management and quality assurance of data across all usage types, including Data Science.  The policy places accountability and responsibility for data governance on senior management as Data Owners within each business area.  The table below represents the numbers and grades of the central Data Governance team only.
